What’s happening in Midtown this Friday? Plenty!
But there’s one event in particular that I’m looking forward to!
Now we’re all looking forward to the game, right (Falcons vs. Jaguars)? Well before you enjoy the action, you should enjoy the block party on Crescent Avenue! The fun will happen between 12th and 13th Streets!
Yacht Rock Schooner will perform live, along with Hot Sauce & Justin. On top of that, enjoy delicious food and beverages! Your ticket will allow you to get into the Street Festival, Front Page News, Vickery’s Bar & Grill and the Sutra Lounge Nightclub!
And as a bonus…
$1 dollar from each ticket will go to benefit the Gulf Aid to help provide relief to the fishing community.
Have fun Lake St. James Place residents!

New Uses for Old Things

Ever used a cocktail shaker for more than just a cocktail? Probably not.
Well here’s an FYI for ya… you can use it for other things! And just like that, there’s other items sitting around your house that would be better off used for another purpose. So let’s just say you do have a cocktail shaker….
Did you know that you could use it to make an iced coffee drink? Add some milk, flavoring, ice and give it a shake! In seconds, you’ll have a delicious energy drink!
And what about a colander? You can use it to cover food during a picnic to keep the flies from it! That beats beating the flies away, right?
A large basket can do many things. If you’re having a cookout, line it with a plastic garbage bag and fill it up with ice to keep your beverages cold!
But let’s not stop here…. there are plenty of other items sitting around your house that can be used for other things! Realsimple.com has an entire list!
Cocktails in the Garden Tomorrow

Enjoy a cocktail, music, small bites and a stroll in the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s new Canopy Walk and Edible Garden during the afternoon.
This relaxing event is $15 per person; but let me just say, it’s definitely worth it. Imagine unwinding from a day of hard work in a beautiful garden, sipping on drinks and plucking items for the Edible Garden to eat.
There will also be a chef on site, performing live demonstrations.
Later, close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the waterfall from the Cascade Garden.
This is one of my favorite places to go to on Thursday afternoons!
You should come out, too! It’s from 6:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.!
See you there!

Get the Dish on Frozen Entrees

Frozen foods can be very tempting to buy, especially when they’re on sale, or when you just don’t feel like cooking. But here’s the thing: frozen foods could be packed with sodium, which can be an alert to your health. But when the frozen entrees call your name from time to time, here’s a tip that I found on realsimple.com to help you make good choices:
Look for: The word healthy on the box. It’s a reliable indicator of good nutrition. Select entrées with no more than 3.5 grams of fat per 100 calories, no more than 600 milligrams total sodium, and no MSG or trans fats, says Lisa Drayer, a registered dietitian in New York City and the author of The Beauty Diet.
So next time you’re in Publix nearby Lake St. James, be sure to look for healthy indicators on the boxes of your frozen favorites.
Slimmer Beef, Perhaps?

I LOVE burgers. There was once a time in which I NEEDED a burger at least twice a week– whether it was from a fastfood chain or a gourmet restaurant, or even a homemade on on the George Foreman– I had to have a burger. And as unhealthy as my appetite for a burger was, I thought, well hey, beef has zinc, iron, vitamins, and other essentials. So while there was a plus two the meat between the buns, I still knew that I had to do something different. So then I tried leaner beef. And not only does it taste good, but I found out this:
Leaner beef also will have less total fat and cholesterol. Also, the principal saturated fatty acid in beef, stearic acid, isn’t the cholesterol raising culprit once thought. Research now shows it has more of a neutral effect. ~ Carolyn O’Neil, AJC.com
So there you have it. Look for leaner beef for to make the perfect burger!

3 “Bad” Foods that are Good for You
March 15, 2010 by spalmer

I keep wishing that one day, someone will tell me that I can eat all the honey buns I want and still stay healthy… and since that’ll never be the case, I did find peace in knowing that there are some “bad” foods that actually aren’t so bad. And if you’re dying to know which “bad” foods you can eat, take a look below:
Eggs- Ditch any worries about your egg intake! Eggs are nutritious and fit into your cholesterol range daily (if you stick to two a day).
Nuts- Nuts are packed with protein, fiber, and
fat– but good fat! Stick with healthier nuts like almonds, walnuts and cashews. And throw some into your morning yogurt to add some flavor.
Chocolate- Some people ‘cringe’ at the thought of chocolate (because they think it’s fattening) but chocolate comes from a plant and has the same health benefits as
dark vegetables. So add a piece of chocolate into your day sometimes!
